Police on Wednesday shot and killed a high school student while arresting many students in Chelya town of western Oromia region, the VOA has reported. Students also fled towns into the woods for fear of mass arrests and beatings. Student protests throughout Oromia region have been backed up by the local people, who have been the targets of government brutality for years. The latest student protest flare-up is linked to a controversial Master Plan of Addis Ababa and Oromia region. The ruling TPLF/EPRDF promotes the politics of ethnic division, a system experts see with apprehension because they believe it is a time-bomb for the eventual fragmentation of the country.
